Penstemon rydbergii<\/em> falls in the violet\/blue color category of this diverse genus. \u00a0The tubular flowers congregate in groups either forming circles or even spheres of flowers. \u00a0 We planted this one in the garden last year, and it has formed a lovely mound of blossoms.\u00a0 \"\"<\/p>\n

Depending on the growing conditions where\u00a0Penstemon\u00a0rydbergii<\/em> is found it can appear to be a completely different species than what your eye is trained to know. \u00a0Sometimes the flowers are white and clustered together very tightly, where others are violet and loosely arranged. \u00a0Perhaps this variety within the species is why\u00a0Aven\u00a0Nelson named this plant after Per Axel Rydberg. \u00a0Rydberg was a well known botanist of his time, famous for naming new species over minor morphological differences instead of placing it as a subspecies. \u00a0Very clever A. For those of you still not sure about wanting this lovely plant in your garden, consider this: \u00a0Penstemons<\/em>\u00a0are known as excellent host plants for\u00a0Castilleja<\/em>\u00a0species. \u00a0Castillejas<\/em> are hemi-parasitic which means they form specialized roots called haustoria roots that attach themselves to a host plant. \u00a0They can survive without a host, but are especially vigorous with a host. \"\"<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
