\"\"Anaphalis margaritacea<\/em>, or western Pearly Everlasting, is a member of the Aster family and\u00a0is the only species of the genus\u00a0Anaphalis<\/em> native to North America.\u00a0 A highly successful species,\u00a0Pearly Everlasting is native to all parts of North America barring the areas bordering the Gulf of Mexico. Caution must be taken in the garden, in fact many gardeners\u00a0consider it weedy, as it self sows freely.\u00a0 However, in the right location, Anaphalis margaritacea<\/em> is virtually unmatched in its ability to\u00a0thrive in tough spots.\u00a0 Best if left neglected in full sun, Pearly\u00a0Everlasting is an\u00a0excellent butterfly attractor for the wildflower meadow or dry bank.\u00a0 In addition it is a food source for Painted lady butterflies as well as a larval host for multiple species of butterfly.\u00a0 This deer resistant rhizomatous perennial grows up to 3 feet tall and displays narrow alternate leaves and clusters of\u00a0numerous small yellow flowers with whorls of white bracts.\u00a0\u00a0Befitting its name, the\u00a0flowers persist from June all the way through October on dry brittle stems, and are excellent for use in floral arrangements.\u00a0 Anaphalis margaritacea<\/em> has many ethnobotanical uses and was used by native peoples throughout North America to treat dysentery, pulmonary affections, burns, sores or swelling, and its roots were used as a laxative.<\/p>\n
