Large clusters of showy star shaped, fragrant flowers bloom from late winter to early summer. Pipestems normally only have one flower on each stalk. White fruits in fall have many silky haired plumes forming a large sphere.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Ecology:<\/strong>\u00a0it can be found growing on hillsides, mixed-evergreen forests, canyon slopes and in open woodland, in southern and central California and is usually below 6000 ft (1800 m).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Growing Conditions:<\/strong>\u00a0full sun to partial shade with well-drained dry soil. It prefers shade for its roots, and sun for its top, and is completely drought tolerant when established.
