Female and male flowers are arranged in catkins and housed on separate trees (dioecious). \u00a0Seeds are attached to white fluffy hairs, aiding in wind dispersal. In autumn, leaves turn a deep yellow.\n<p><strong>Ecology:<\/strong>\u00a0found in Western North America in riparian zones, including flood plains, moist woods on mountain slopes, and disturbed sites at elevations below 9100 ft (2800 m).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Growing Conditions:<\/strong>\u00a0full sun in moist to wet soil.
