Mature bark is woody and brown peeling away with age while young branches are reddish purple to brown and variably hairy. Smooth, dull green leaves are opposite and oval shaped margins roll under. Greenish white flowers are inconspicuously tucked under the leaves ripening to the beautiful coral pink berries that persist into much of the winter.
